AENA to explain radar installation to locals
10/12/2003
The Minister for Development, Francisco Alvarez Cascos, explained today that the Spanish Airport and Aerial Navegation Department (AENA) are quite willing to "continue supplying any technical information" relevant to their plans to install a radar at the Los Rodeos airport in the north of Tenerife. The statement was made in response to a request for a meeting between AENA representatives, Santa Cruz and San Cristobal de La Laguna Town Halls, and residents of the Anaga Rural Park district, to explain the need to install the radar. Cascos explained that a meeting was held on the 4th December which had "cleared up any remaining doubts." However, the minister went on to explain that "with current equipment, there is no radar coverage for north Tenerife airport below 900 metres, which is why it is necessary to extend coverage to the west of the island." However, Cascos was at pains to reassure locals that "procedures followed by AENA guarantee that the operation will be extremely safe."
