A failed attempt yesterday evening to blow up a 17 metre-high monolith erected to former dictator Francisco Franco in 1961 in the Islas Cies Natural Park (Vigo) revealed that the large concrete structure had been built using railway tracks, something that exploratory drilling had failed to establish.
After the sturdy iron bars were cut yesterday, the giant fascist symbol was finally brought crashing down to earth this morning using a second charge of 25kg dynamite.
The rubble will be removed over the next few days.
