DAMAGE to the brain caused by long-term cannabis consumption is reversible in the long term, an investigation centre in Vitoria (Basque Country) has revealed.
Those who smoke marihuana regularly develop extreme paranoia and are at a serious risk of suffering from psychosis or schizophrenia as a result.
But research at the Biomedical Investigation Centre – part of the Mental Health Network at Santiago Apóstol Hospital – shows that in the medium- to long-term, these illnesses are usually cured eventually if the patient stops smoking the drug.
In the past, medical experts had always believed that cannabis-induced psychosis and schizophrenia were incurable.
However, studies now show that in a period of between five and eight years after ceasing to smoke marihuana, the majority recovered.
