SPAIN'S headcount has risen to its highest figure in history – for the first time ever, the population has broken the 48 million barrier.

Large numbers of shop workers have also staged a demonstration today through the main streets and the Old Town in Bilbao, informing other workers about the strike called for today to demand fresh negotiations on the general wages agreement, while they shouted slogans, handed out leaflets and placed stickers on the windows of some shops.
