TORRENTIAL rainfall in Vinaròs (Castellón) and the province of Tarragona today has left roads cut off and up to 50 centimetres (1'8”) of flood water on the pavements.
The rain reached a terrifying 200 to 250 litres per square metre in Mas de Barberans, Horta de Sant Joan, Tortosa (all in Tarragona) and Vinaròs, with around 130 litres in L'Aldea and 90 in Aldover (Tarragona).
Rainfall reaching 40 litres per square metre – around four centimetres – is classed as a major seasonal storm and is enough for the met office to issue weather warnings and put emergency flood protection measures into operation.
Firefighters were called out to 71 incidents of flooded underbuilds and ground floors between Friday night and Saturday morning in Amposta, Tortosa, Alcanar and La Fatarella (Tarragona), but said there were no serious issues such as death, injury or properties collapsing.
Rail traffic has been disrupted in Tortosa and L'Aldea due to rockfalls blocking the track.
Roads in the Tortosa and L'Aldea areas which have been shut include the N-340, the C-12, the TV-3421, the TV-3111, the TV-3314, and the T-301.
