TORRENTIAL rain yesterday in the Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia and the province of Almería caused extensive flooding and saw the fire brigade working around the clock.
Two roads were cut off on the coast of Almería and at least 40 people had to be rescued after they became trapped in flooded garages, ground floors and in cars in Pulpí and Mojácar.
Parts of buildings also crumbled, forcing firefighters to intervene.
Over 40 litres of rain per square metre – the equivalent of a typical October monsoon – was seen in the province in less than 24 hours.
In the Comunidad Valenciana, the coastal areas were the worst-hit – although 37 litres of rain per square metre was registered in the inland town of Alcoy and 35 in Sax (Alicante), the Ribera Alta and Ribera Baixa districts of the province of Valencia saw up to 99 litres of rain per square metre.
Yesterday afternoon saw constant heavy rain, but the worst of the storms between Castellón and Almería occurred overnight between 22.00hrs and about 07.00hrs.
