Debate over banning short-distance flights takes off, but the cons outweigh the pros
Freak storms hit Canary Islands and rain sweeps east coast
29/11/2014
GALE-FORCE winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour are due to hit the Canary Islands and the met office has issued a red alert.
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma will suffer the worst of the winds today (Saturday) and tomorrow, whilst Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are under an orange warning as gusts are expected to reach at least 120 kilometres per hour.
Most of the east and north-east of Spain is likely to be hit by torrential rain and flash floods, particularly the provinces of Teruel, Barcelona, Valencia, Castellón, Girona and Tarragona.
Forecasts of downpours for Castellón and Valencia have so far proven to be largely unfounded, with sunshine and temperatures of approximately 21ºC, but early-morning storms and fog hit Valencia today and led to flight delays as aircraft struggled to land.
Most of the winds are predicted to calm down by late on Sunday night, but the orange warning for heavy storms will remain in place, particularly in Catalunya.
