Already, today's storms have left several people injured in the north-western region of Galicia, and forced Celta de Vigo FC to call off its planned match against Real Madrid.
All regions except Murcia in the south-east and the Canary Islands will be hit with bad weather today or tomorrow at some point, and tidal waves are expected in the provinces of Castellón, Girona, Tarragona, Barcelona, Almería and most of the Balearic Islands.
The risk of waves several metres high threatening streets, esplanades and homes on the immediate shoreline, especially on urban beaches, is particularly great in the regions of Galicia, Asturias (pictured), Cantabria, and the coastal provinces of the Basque Country.
A total of 37 provinces are on alert for high winds, including all of those in Catalunya; all of Castilla-La Mancha except Ciudad Real; Aragón – albeit less intense in the Pyrénéen province of Huesca; Madrid; the Basque Country; Galicia; Castilla y León; Navarra; La Rioja; Asturias; Cantabria; the Valencia region, except for the province of Alicante; the island of Mallorca, and the provinces of Almería (Andalucía) and Cáceres (Extremadura).
Rain is likely to be torrential in Castilla y León, except in the provinces of Soria, Segovia and Valladolid, as well as in Cáceres and the Galicia provinces of Ourense and Pontevedra.
Snow is forecast for the weekend at altitudes in the northern half of the country, and rainy parts of this area could come with thunder and lightning.
Scattered showers are likely throughout the rest of the mainland and Balearics except in the east, south-east and Ibiza.
No real temperature changes are expected, meaning the slightly milder climate seen in the last week or two since the first major 'deep freeze' of winter 2017 will continue for the meantime.
