One of the main drivers behind these rocket earnings is cult director Pedro Almodóvar's latest flick, Julieta, the lead role for which has won its main character Emma Suárez one of her two Goyas she picked up last night.
Aired in a total of 50 countries, Julieta – starring the late actress, model and singer Bimba Bosè, niece of legendary singer Miguel who lost her battle against cancer last month aged 41 – grossed €15.2m during its time in cinemas, of which €14.6m was in 2016 and the rest in the previous five weeks alone, in 2017.
The animated film directed by Enrique Gato, Atrapa la Bandera ('Trap the Flag') was the second-highest earner in 2016, followed by the Disney Spanish-language film Tini. El Gran Cambio de Violetta ('Tini: Violetta's Big Change'), at €8.54m and €6.6m respectively, although they are both still on the big screen and have earnt a total of €9.6m and €6.7m.
Films in Spanish, even where not Spanish productions themselves, have also done extremely well over the past year with the Argentinian products El Hilo Rojo ('The Red Thread'), about people joined by destiny and fated to meet, and El Ciudadano Ilustre ('The Illustrious Citizen'), about the live of a Nobel Prize-winning novelist's emigration to Europe, and which won Best Latin American Film at last night's Goya Awards, grossed €3.8m and €3.31m, of which €3.28m of the latter was in 2016.
Director Cesc Gay's Truman and Alberto Marini's thriller Summer Camp – starring Kylie Minogue's partner Andrés Velencoso and centring on four young adults from the US working the summer as camp instructors in Spain – earned €2.57m and €1.89m in 2016, or €5.2m and €1.93m in total including in 2017.
Javier Fesser's fun children's adventure film, Mortadelo y Filemón, and Daniel Calparsoro's Cien años de perdón ('A hundred years of reprieve') – focusing on a Valencia bank head office robbery and the mysterious agenda of the gang in question – have earnt €1.58m and €1.54m for 2016, and €2m and €1.56m in total, including in 2017.
From now on, the ICAA will publish box office figures monthly for Spanish films shown abroad, following an agreement with the cinema consultancy Comscore, to raise awareness of the value of the industry in Spain.
