Jewellery worth €30,000 stolen during Goya Awards night
07/02/2017
A BOX filled with jewellery from the prestigious designer Suárez was stolen at the recent Goya Awards ceremony, including a ring, four sets of cufflinks, two watches and a pair of earrings.
Said to be worth around €30,000, the valuables were taken from one of the suites at the Hotel Marriott Auditorium, in Madrid, where the ceremony took place.
The hotel room was frequented throughout the night by actors, actresses, employees of the venue and the stars, plus dozens of film industry-related workers, meaning the theft is believed to have been an 'inside job' carried out by somebody who knew where the jewellery was and had easy access to the suite.
CCTV footage will need to be studied in detail.
Police say the door was not forced, and are investigating whether the key card was tampered with.
With the high volume of 'human traffic' on Goya night, it was not until Monday – over 36 hours later – that the jewellery was found to be missing.
It was at this point when ceremony organisers were gathering up the clothing and accessories lent to stars on the red carpet to return them to the designers, who advertise themselves by loaning outfits to celebrities for major events, that they discovered the items missing.
The organisation says unless any single article is worth a given amount, it does not appoint a security guard specifically to watch over jewellery.
Photographic equipment was also stolen at the ceremony, the hotel management says.
