Debate over banning short-distance flights takes off, but the cons outweigh the pros
Winter's back for the weekend: Rain and high winds across whole of Spain with chilly night temperatures
03/03/2017
ANOTHER cold snap is due to hit the mainland today (Friday) with high winds on the Mediterranean and thick snow widespread across the country.
Just as everyone in Spain thought spring had come early – with temperatures pushing 18ºC in the south, east and Balearics and higher still in the Canaries – winter has popped back for a visit with snow expected at altitudes above 1,000 metres, possibly reaching depths of 20 centimetres (eight inches).
Turbulent seas mean beach esplanades may not be safe over the weekend as gales batter the Mediterranean and south-east, and strong gusts are also forecast in mountainous areas.
Night temperatures in the north and inland will range from -2ºC to 3ºC, and between 4ºC and 6ºC on the hitherto balmy east coast.
By Sunday, lows on the Mediterranean will be down to between 2ºC and 4ºC, with Valencia being the coldest coastal province from the French border to the Strait of Gibraltar.
Day temperatures are not expected to go down greatly and will be back to highs of up to 25ºC on the coasts and from 15ºC to 18ºC inland across the mainland.
Rain, which could be torrential, is forecast everywhere except in the far south-eastern province of Almería today and Saturday, and although most of the east and south will be dry and sunny on Sunday and Monday, downpours will persist elsewhere.
