Phone chargers now on Barcelona metro Line 2
06/03/2017
MOBILE phone battery chargers are gradually being rolled out on Barcelona's metro, starting with two trains on Line 2 which went live today (Monday).
Cost-free to use and high-powered for swift charging, equipped with four USB ports each, the new sockets are part of a pilot scheme launched jointly with the Catalunya-based firm Yupcharge, which uses Agile Power technology.
The chargers were firstly fitted at the Sagrada Família station on both platforms – in the Badalona-Pompeu Fabra and Passeig de Gràcia directions – and in the corridor of the interchange for the station Universidad, but have now been adapted to fit directly onto trains.
For Android phones, the new apparatus charge up batteries 75% faster than conventional plug-socket attachments for the mains electricity supply, meaning even a metro journey of a few stops is enough to put some 'juice' back into a flagging handset.
For Apple phones, the chargers go up to 3 Amp.
Chairwoman of the public-sector company Barcelona Metropolitan Transport (TMB), Mercedes Vidal, says in modern society having a fully-charged and useable mobile phone is 'becoming more and more crucial'.
But she says her team wants to see how popular the system is on Line 2 before deciding whether to extend it to other routes on the city underground rail network.
