Fallas under cover due to torrential rain and wind
13/03/2017
VALENCIA has been forced to postpone today's mascletà, or gunpowder banger display because of torrential rain reaching 140 litres per square metre (14 centimetres, or nearly six inches) across the region.
Fiesta organisers have been told not to unveil their falla statues because of high winds accompanying the deluge, which struck last night (Sunday) with thunder storms and lightning.
At the moment, all the papier mâché monuments, or fallas – house-sized displays featuring caricatures of famous people and politicians and satirising current affairs, and which tend to feature president Mariano Rajoy heavily (pictured) – are under tarpaulins, and are likely to stay there until at least Wednesday night when the extreme weather conditions subside.
The mascletaes, a fundamental part of the very Valencian Fallas festival, take place daily at 14.00 and visitors from all over the region and beyond travel to the city to witness them.
Doom and gloom pervades currently in towns in the province of Valencia which also celebrate the Fallas – albeit generally in a less-spectacular fashion to the city – but reassuring weather forecasts hint that the main fiesta period, from Thursday, March 16 to Sunday, March 19, will be dry and sunny.
