TWO of Spain's largest high-street banks are reported to be in merger talks, potentially resulting in the joint entity being the second-biggest in the country in terms of share capital.
Bank of Spain money printers on strike
15/03/2017
A 'MINT strike' of 24 hours will start tomorrow (Thursday) at the Bank of Spain means no money will be printed all day – or at least, by 80% of staff at the printing firm, Imbisa, who have confirmed they will down tools.
Called by one of Spain's major unions, the Labourers' Commission (CCOO), the strike is in protest over the company's decision to break the collective working conditions agreement in force and 'impose new terms unilaterally', particularly in relation to in-house promotion and new employees.
The CCOO says the company's management has a 'turbulent and conflictive relationship' with its workers and 'has been trying to reduce their rights for a year and a half'.
Over 30% of staff are on temporary contracts which may or may not be renewed at the end of the term, says the union.
How far this will affect the circulation of notes and coins is not clear.
