A FIRE that broke out in Madrid's metro last night (Saturday) led to a member of staff becoming injured and clouds of smoke rising up from a ventilator on the street.
Police had to close off the C/ Ayacucho to traffic due to the smoke after the blaze broke out on a raised mobile scaffolding at Mar de Cristal station (pictured) on Line 8, the airport link, at around 18.15.
A maintenance worker on top of the platform at the time had to be rushed to the nearby Gregorio Marañón Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
No passengers were hurt, since the line remains closed for renovation works on either side of the platform, having shut down on January 26.
Line 4, which is still open, runs through Mar de Cristal station, but did not suffer any delays because of the fire.
Three fire engines were needed to tackle the blaze, which was extinguished within a matter of hours.
