Penélope Cruz and Jane Goodall to get awards at Third Millennium Women Forum prizegiving
05/04/2017
ACTRESS Penélope Cruz has won the Third Millennium Woman Award thanks to her work in directing a documentary about children with leukaemia.
She will receive her prize at the Third Millennium Women Forum, from the Happy Women Foundation, held over May 5 and 6 at the La Caixa Forum in Madrid.
Last year, in a bid to raise funds for and awareness of leukaemia in children, Penélope (pictured) created the documentary Uno entre cien mil ('One in a hundred thousand').
Other work by Spain's home-grown Hollywood star for charitable causes, her social conscience and professionalism are among the reasons for granting her the award.
The Third Millennium Woman Award is the top prize at next month's Forum, but another seven will be given out for humanitarian and social reasons – one of which, the Carers of Life Award, will go to British chimpanzee expert and United Nations 'messenger of peace', Jane Goodall, who has a primate rescue centre named after her in La Nucía (Alicante province).
The others will to film director and human rights activist Mabel Lozano, for Communications; to reporter and writer Lydia Cacho, for Courage and Bravery; to scientist and social entrepreneur Pilar Mateo, for Science and Technology; to Ana Bella, founder of a battered wives' shelter and support foundation, for Women's Rights Protection; contemporary painter Lita Cabellut for Women in Art, and to Carmen Hijosa, who created an environmentally- and animal-friendly leather out of pine leaves called Piñatex, for Innovation and Social Advancement.
