LINE 8 on Madrid's metro – the only one which leads directly to the airport – has reopened a week earlier than planned after two-and-a-half months of maintenance and renovation works.
Most of the construction involved improving facilities, upgrading the platform, replacing parts of the track and fixing ceiling leaks.
As a result, Line 8 can now travel faster and more safely.
Already the fastest route on Madrid's underground train network, Line 8 – which covers eight stations over 16.5 kilometres, from Nuevos Ministerios to Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport terminal 4 – carries an average of 45,000 passengers a day, and Easter is one of its busiest times of the year.
Work was not originally due to finish until Easter Monday, April 18 – which is not a bank holiday in Madrid as Maundy Thursday is taken instead – but civil engineers upped the pace to ensure swift airport transport in time for the long holiday weekend.
