TWO migrant boats carrying 14 Africans each have been intercepted off the coast of Mallorca in the space of 24 hours.
In both cases, the six-metre blow-up motorboats were carrying men, although nine in total claimed to be under 18.
Police checks on these youngsters found only one of them to be a minor.
The crafts were spotted heading for the coast near Sa Ràpita, and Red Cross workers were waiting on the shore to give them first aid, warm blankets, food and drink.
But they were all taken away by National Police, who will place them in an immigration internment centre and arrange for them to be deported.
These two boats make up 50% of the arrivals via the 'back door' in Mallorca so fra this year, after a craft reached Cala Beltrán last month and another arrived in Cala Pi over New Year's Day.
Three migrant boats turned up in the Balearic Islands in 2016 and 2015 each, and two in 2014.
The Balearic Islands are not typical destinations for Africans seeking to enter Europe via Spain – most head for the south and south-east coasts, typically arriving in Cádiz and Almería.
