Passenger ferry heading for Tenerife crashes in Gran Canaria port leaving 13 injured
22/04/2017
A FERRY carrying 140 passengers from Gran Canaria to Tenerife crashed into the pier in Las Palmas port last night (Friday) due to a 'technical fault'.
The crash happened just after the ship, the Armas, had set sail at around 20.30 from La Luz harbour and paramedics were called to the scene.
They treated 12 passengers for minor cuts and bruises and panic attacks, and a 13th was taken to hospital with mid- and upper-back injuries.
In total, five had to be admitted to hospital – one was a child taken to the paediatric and maternity university centre and the others to Santa Catalina hospital in Las Palmas.
Nobody is believed to have suffered life-threatening wounds, or injuries that may leave permanent damage.
Port authorities say the ferry suffered a mechanical breakdown which affected its steering.
Travellers who did not need medical attention were put up in hotels until another ship could be brought in to take them to Tenerife.
