FREAK storms in Andalucía have led to chaos with over 200 emergency service call-outs in the province of Huelva alone within just two-and-a-half hours.
Most of the incidences were in Huelva city and the town of Punta Umbría, although other cases were reported in Moguer, Lepe, Palos de la Frontera, Valverde del Camino, and Aracena.
They included two children having to be rescued from a car that had become trapped on the Avenida Escultora Miss Whitney in Huelva, plus homes, garages and business premises flooded and streets blocked, particularly affecting the Avenida Cristóbal Colón, Avenida de Tráfico Pesado, Avenida de Alemania and the C/ Santa Ana in the city.
Roads flooded included the A-5000 at kilometre 2, the HU-9109 in Aracena – which had suffered a landslide – the A-494 in Moguer and the N-442 in Palos.
Schools in Palos, Huelva and Punta Umbría were affected by floods and leaks, with one having no kitchen and several others left without electricity.
Classes were not formally ceased, but many parents chose to collect their children.
In other cases, with the worst of the rain falling between 07.00 and noon, many pupils were unable to get to school at all.
They will not now have to return to school until Tuesday, since Monday, May 1 is a bank holiday in the whole of Spain.
