Rubén Fresneda, from Alcoi (Alicante province), whose works are famous in his home town and beyond, was a member of the UNESCO Friends Club, the heritage association Guanyar Alcoi – which was involved in promoting the ancient chapel in the inland municipality – and the Mariola LGB society, as well as being on the Local Political Advisory Committee for United Left on the council.
He had gone out with a group of friends on Sunday to spend the day on the beach in Villajoyosa, southern Alicante province, and is believed to have been dragged away by the current.
Rubén's friends called for help at around noon when they noticed he was in trouble in the water.
Local Police and the Guardia Civil hauled him out, but he had already drowned and they were unable to save him.
Alcoi is said to be 'distraught' by the news.
