A DRIVER left €10,000 in cash on the roof of his car and forgot about it until he set off – by which time nearly €4,000 had blown away and been pocketed by passersby.
The man drove off down the highway between O Lapido and Santiago de Compostela in the province of A Coruña, Galicia at 09.00 and it was not until his son told him about the cash that he stopped the car.
He got out and retraced his steps, noticing a 'long queue of vehicles' behind his car.
Their occupants had got out and stuffed as many notes as they could in their pockets.
The driver contacted the emergency hotline, 112, immediately and the Municipal Police in the nearby town of Ames and the Guardia Civil rushed to the scene.
They have so far recovered €6,150.
Various witnesses reported a coach driver who had got out of her vehicle and scooped up several notes.
She and several other people are 'helping with police inquiries', since keeping cash or valuables found in public and not handing them in is a criminal offence.
But not everyone who picked up the bank notes was 'dishonest', officers say – many of them took them to the driver who had lost them.
