A CHILDREN'S football trainer has been fired after his team flattened the opposition in a match by scoring 25-0, creating divided opinions among the public.
The manager was in charge of the CD Serranos Juniors, aged 10 and 11, who were already guaranteed a win when they had scored 6-0 against Benicalap C after the first 15 minutes.
By half-time, they were up to 15-0 and carried on relentlessly scoring against their rivals in the second half.
Benicalap, based in the suburb of the same name in Valencia city, is currently on zero goals all season, with 247 scored against them.
CD Serranos football club, in the northern inland part of the province of Valencia, said: “We train our children in social values such as respect for the opposition team, and this behaviour is not acceptable.”
The club claims the trainer 'ordered' the boys to carry on trying to score even though there was no way back for Benicalap well before half-time.
But the trainer's solicitor, defending, says 'at no point' did the manager encourage his young players to try to increase their already-huge margin against the other team – and, in fact, told them to give Benicalap a break and stop putting them under so much pressure.
And as Benicalap C did not have any substitutes, the match had to continue in the same vein.
No CD Serranos player or parent commented negatively on tactics or the trainer's strategy after the match, and in fact only one adult representative of the winning team was present – even then, merely for the first few minutes of the game.
The trainer himself said the decision to remove him from the post had already been taken before the match.
