OVER 230 migrants reached Spanish shores in six jerry-built and overcrowded motorboats yesterday (Saturday) alone in an attempt to enter Europe via the 'back door' to escape poverty and war, or simply for a better quality of life.
They were 230 of the lucky ones who reach dry land – thousands of migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean for the same reasons never make it to Europe alive.
This time, Spanish coastguard authorities rescued 143 men who claimed to be of Moroccan origin off the coast of Tarifa (Cádiz province) in the early hours of the morning, and then nine sub-Saharan men shortly afterwards in the same area.
Further east near the Isle of Alborán – about halfway between the province of Almería and the coast of Morocco – 11 women, four children and another 58 men, all sub-Saharan Africans, were rescued when they tried to reach the mainland in two sailing boats, and taken to the port in Motril (Granada province) to be attended to by the Red Cross.
Six more men were taken ashore when they sailed into the bay of Ses Salines, the southernmost point of Mallorca, before being transported to the Guardia Civil station in Manacor.
In total, six boats were spotted and 231 migrants helped ashore.
A MAN declared dead at his home in the province of Tarragona was on his way to the funeral parlour when he turned out to be alive, according to police sources.
