VOLKSWAGEN has recalled 766,000 vehicles worldwide after a problem with the braking system used was detected this week.
This will include a high number in Spain, although the exact total is not yet known.
In Germany alone, where Volkswagen is based, a total of 288,000 VW-branded cars and vans, plus a further 97,000 Skoda and Audi models are affected.
Tests have shown that in some cases, the vehicles do not stabilise in certain 'extreme' situations when braking, and will therefore need to be checked out by a local dealer.
According to the company, the ABS-ESP braking control systems will have to be examined and their software reconfigured.
Volkswagen is still recovering from its worldwide 'Dieselgate' scandal, where rogue software was found to have been fitted to EA-189 engines to mask emissions readings.
Last month, Spanish consumer giant OCU filed a claim against Volkswagen-Audi Spain on behalf of over 7,500 car-owners for compensation to the tune of €22.6 million.
