Acrobat's death at Mad Cool festival sparks criticisms as event 'carries on regardless'
08/07/2017
AN ACROBAT has been killed mid-stunt during the massive Mad Cool arts and music festival in Madrid, and the public has slammed the organisers for not calling off the rest of the event as a mark of respect.
Around 45,000 spectators witnessed the tragedy on the second day of the festival, which was delayed by just 20 minutes as a result – the artist's death plunge was at 23.00, North American rockers Green Day were due on stage at 23.25, and did not start their gig until 23.45.
“I've seen the acrobat's death live at Mad Cool and I don't know how people can still want to carry on – the empathy of a sociopathic society,” one Twitter-user wrote.
“It's shameful that the festival was not called off the next day,” another tweeted.
The acrobat had been lifted up in a cage by a crane to start his act, to the tune of Prince's Purple rain, secured by a harness at hip-level.
It appears the harness broke or gave way, and he fell 30 metres (just over 98 feet) to the ground.
Despite the massive impact as he hit the ground, most of those watching still thought it was all part of the act.
But they realised something had gone terribly wrong when paramedics rushed into the ring.
He was in cardiac arrest, and all attempts to revive him failed.
His show was scheduled for just after Alt-J's concert and before Green Day hit the stage.
Green Day made no mention of the tragedy whatsoever during their gig, which attracted criticism.
But the band later tweeted that until it had finished its show and left the stage, none of them knew anything about it.
One of the bands due to perform next, Slowdive, refused to do so, particularly the group's name alone would appear in poor taste after the accident.
An official press release was not given until 03.25, some four hours after the acrobat's death, explaining what had happened and saying that the festival 'had decided to continue with its schedule for security reasons'.
A tribute to the late artist has been programmed for today (Saturday), the final day of the festival, which will not otherwise suffer any alterations in its schedule.
