Spanish tourist, 80, arrested for defecating in Pompei
18/07/2017
A SPANISH tourist has been arrested for defecating in Pompei whilst visiting the ruins of the city destroyed centuries ago by the eruption of Vesuvius.
His wife has also been charged, as she stood in front of him to conceal him from members of the public.
The accused, aged 80, told police he suffered from incontinence and was unable to help it.
He was particularly criticised for relieving himself in the Casa di Menandro, a Roman villa which is one of the best-preserved parts of the historical complex in the bay of Naples.
A security guard told the Carabinieri, Italy's answer to the Guardia Civil, but they did not believe him at first and went to check.
The incident happened on a day when two government ministers were on site for the official opening of a new tourist route around Pompei.
The Spaniard was charged with 'vandalism' in a 'national heritage monument'.
Italy's government is cracking down on behaviour which falls within this definition, and warns that those found guilty could face up to five years in jail.
