Fiestas cancelled as towns mourn family killed in holiday home fire
19/07/2017
THREE days of mourning until tomorrow (Thursday) have been declared in Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz) after a father and daughter and family friend died in a fire at their summer house and the mother and son were left fighting for their lives in hospital.
A fatal combination of an anti-mosquito candle left alight overnight, a paper tablecloth beneath it, a wooden porch and plastic roof led to the house near the beach in the tied hamlet of El Palmar becoming engulfed in flames.
José Corrientes Humanes, 41, who worked for Airbus in Sevilla, rushed into his daughter Julia's room to save her when the family was awakened by the smell of smoke and burning plastic at around 01.20 on Sunday, but they both succumbed to smoke inhalation.
Emergency services found them locked together in an embrace and, although Julia was in cardiac arrest, managed to restart her heart.
But she passed away in hospital on Sunday without regaining consciousness on what would have been her fifth birthday.
Best friend and work colleague Luis González, who was spending the weekend with the family, was heard crying out in agony for José when he made it outside and realised he was dead in the back room.
But with 80% burns to his body, Luis followed his closest pal and companion from the Los Guzmanes cycling club to the grave hours later.
Julia's mother and José's wife Carmen Navarro was found alive, but only just, with burns to between 80% and 90% of her body.
Medics are not expecting her to survive.
In a cruel twist of fate, firefighters and paramedics who found Carmen and her family would have been sent out by her own colleagues, since she works for the 112 emergency hotline.
José and Carmen's other son, Jaime, aged nine, has suffered burns to 65% of his body and is in a critical condition, but with some chances of pulling through.
The family and their friend Luis lived in La Algaba (Sevilla province), where they had moved for José's job as military aircraft engineer, although they were originally from Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz province).
As every summer, they were planning to spend a month in their portokabin-style holiday home on the beach, and were very well-known and loved in El Palmar.
Having spent the past 20 years holidaying in the area, they had lots of friends there who described them as 'outgoing and helpful'.
The property was a pre-fab construction, since it was on a green-belt plot where fixed buildings cannot be erected and only those classed as 'mobile', such as caravans or park homes, can be set up.
Vejer de la Frontera and La Algaba town halls declared three days of mourning after the news broke, and the latter has called off all programmed fiesta activities in the meantime as a mark of respect.
Carmen's sisters agreed for little Julia's organs to be donated 'so she can save other lives after her death'.
The funeral for José and Julia was yesterday (Tuesday) and Luis was expected to be buried today.
