POLICE on the Costa del Sol have arrested a Dutchman who may have been on the run for up to six year.
The accused, 34, from Roosendal in The Netherlands was part of a major international drug-smuggling racket which transported cocaine and heroin in containers to the port of Amberes, which relied upon collaboration with dock workers in on the operation.
At least 2.2 tonnes of cocaine and 1.1 tonnes of heroin were shipped to the northern European country until police uncovered the racket and seized various hauls between November 2011 and July 2013.
Several members of the smuggling operation were arrested in May 2011 when they met a container with 176 kilos of cocaine on board as it came into port.
This week, a man has been arrested in Benalmádena (Málaga province) after escaping justice back in 2011.
He is said to have been in charge of transport and the main logistics organiser, working closely with the ringleader of the illicit operation.
When he was caught in the southern Spanish seaside town, he was carrying an ID card from Estonia, but his real identity was swiftly checked and confirmed.
He is due to appear before a judge tomorrow (Monday) at the National Court and is expected to be deported.
