A GUARDIA Civil officer has been killed in the course of duty by an overtaking car who 'did not see him', emergency services revealed.
Rafael González Novales, 45, who was married with three children, had been on his way to the scene of a crash in nearby Benasque at around 13.00 yesterday (Monday) when he started to overtake a car midway through the Pyrénéen town.
The car driver did not see the officer pass, and had decided to do so at the same moment, with disastrous consequences.
Rafael was flung clear of his bike and slammed into a road sgn at around kilometre 435 of the N-260 inter-provincial highway.
Chief of traffic police in Monzón and living in Barbastro, Rafael had previously been stationed in Aínsa for around two months.
The town declared two days of mourning for him.
