Has Arcade Fire pinched Spanish group Templeton's backing track? British reporter finds 'similarities'
A BRITISH music magazine has hinted that the band Arcade Fire may have 'borrowed' a tune from the Spanish outfit Templeton, claiming the new single by the former 'sounds awfully similar' to the track La Gran Ciudad ('The Big City') released by the latter in 2014.
Journalist Tom Connick's article in NME says the single Everything Now, which is Arcade Fire's album title track, 'has been revealed to share an awful lot of similarities' to La Gran Ciudad, particularly its 'disco-influenced beat' which is 'led by a huge, ABBA-esque melody'.
“The main hook of Everything Now bears a more-than-striking resemablance to La Gran Ciudad, a track by a little-known Spanish band called Templeton,” Connick writes.
“Released on 2014's Rosi, the Templeton track began circling online amongst their fanbase after Arcade Fire released Everything Now, with some accusing the Canadian group of 'ripping off' the melody entirely.”
Templeton (pictured left) has milked the funny side of the situation with tongue-in-cheek tweets saying it is going to sue Arcade Fire (pictured right), after which it will be able to retire, 'a million each and we're all set up'.
“Whilst you're waiting for our latest news, you can enjoy the new Arcade Fire single from minute 02:42,” joked Templeton on Twitter, posting a video of its own La Gran Ciudad.
Arcade Fire has not commented, although it seems Templeton is quite flattered by the idea and pleased with the extra publicity.
Templeton is due to release a new album in October, Una mar enorme ('An enormous sea').
