Nobody had contacted the hospital to enquire after her, and she was drifting in and out of consciousness, meaning neither police nor medics were able to find out who she was.
They described her as a woman of 'about 30' and said she could not remember anything about the fall on Friday.
The victim, who remains in hospital, is a Swedish woman aged 41 who had been an in-patient at the mental health unit in San Juan (Alicante) due to having suffered psychotic outbreaks.
She only remembered having been sitting on the wall at the castle, a major tourism hotspot, and may have lost her balance.
The patient, who has sustained severe back wounds and is still in intensive care, was only carrying her mobile phone, no passport or other ID.
Police say there were no witnesses to her fall, and they were called out by other castle visitors who saw her lying on the ground.
They are investigating further to see whether, as they initially suspect, her plunge was an accident, or whether foul play was involved.
