British merchant ship adrift off Gran Canaria shores
15/08/2017
A CARGO ship loaded with ammonium nitrate is floating adrift off the coast of Gran Canaria with no crew, coastguard watchers report.
The MV Cheshire, which has a British insignia, was abandoned en masse yesterday (Monday) when smoke began billowing out of one of its containers and a sharp rise in its temperature was detected, leading the 24 crew members to fear an imminent explosion.
Since then, the 190-metre, 56.6-tonne fertiliser-carrying ship, which belongs to the marine transport company Bibby Line Limited, has been floating around at about 60 to 70 miles off the coast of Arguineguín, a popular holidaymaker and expat bolthole.
Its 40 mega-tonnes of fertiliser were being shipped from Norway to Thailand, and a scheduled refuelling stop had been planned for Sunday.
A specialist ship rescue company, Resolve Marine, has been called in to try to cool down the cargo and then to make an informed decision as to what to do next.
As yet, Bibby Line Ltd is not clear of the risks that may be involved in the craft continuing on its journey.
