Rafa Nadal clinches third US Open of his career
11/09/2017
SPAIN'S Rafa Nadal has clinched his 16th Grand Slam title and his third US Open after beating South Africa's Kevin Anderson in straight sets.
Back at ATP world number one, Mallorca-born Rafa won all 16 points he contested at the net, losing just 15 points on serve and not facing a single break point in his battle against the 6'8” giant who, despite being the same age – 31 – says he has 'been watching Nadal all his life'.
Anderson, playing his first-ever Grand Slam final, faced a tough task with six deuces to get through in the second and third games, and a forehand that went into the tramlines during the seventh game led to his facing a sixth break point.
The set ended on 6-3, a performance Rafa repeated in the second set, then sealed Anderson's fate on his second match point to seal set three 6-4.
Anderson, although disappointed with the result, congratulated his idol, who is set to stay at the top of the ATP rankings until at least the end of the season if he keeps up his current level of play.
This is the first time Rafa has won two Grand Slam titles in the same season – having netted the Paris Open at Roland Garros - since 2013, a year after his injuries began to take their toll and led to his being forced to drop out for eight months to fully recover.
