Javier Gómez Noya wins World Ironman Championships in Tennessee
14/09/2017
SPAIN'S Javier Gómez Noya is once again World Ironman Champion for the second time in his career after becoming the fastest person on earth to complete the toughest branch of triathlon.
The Galicia-born sports ace, 34, finished the course on Sunday in Chattanooga (Tennessee, USA) in three hours, 49 minutes and 45 seconds, beating US-based Ben Kanute by 1.22 minutes and the UK's Timothy Don by 2.15 minutes, pushing them into second and third place respectively.
Noya, who has been European champion four times and won a silver at the London 2012 Olympics, had to tackle 1,900 metres swimming (nearly 1.2 miles), 90 kilometres (56.25 miles) cycling and a half-marathon, which is just over 21 kilometres, or 13 miles to clinch his top global title.
The last time he won the World Ironman Championships was in 2014 in Edmonton, Canada.
Noya, from Ferrol, squeezed in a final practice round before the contest a week previously at a triathlon in Des Moines.
