Barcelona bakery explosion 'accident, not terrorism'
17/09/2017
A BAKERY explosion in central Barcelona has left 21 people injured, one of whom is in a critical condition, but authorities stress that the blast was an unfortunate accident and not a deliberate act of destruction.
Tourists and residents, hearing the earth-shattering ban and seeing clouds of smoke coming from the C/ Marina, feared it was another terrorist attack – and many were woken up by it since the explosion was at 07.00 on Saturday when nowhere was yet open.
But the conflagration, which completely destroyed the kiln, was strictly internal, say firefighters.
Of the 21 injured, six were treated on site and another six taken to hospitals or health centres but discharged later the same day, whilst eight were admitted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and one other is in a critical condition.
Most of the injuries were smoke inhalation rather than external wounds.
The flames were put out almost immediately and did not affect any other buildings nearby, but the giant column of smoke was visible for some distance.
