SPAIN'S Ana Carrasco is the first-ever female to win a world championship motorcycle race in a sport that continues to be male-dominated.
Ana, 20, netted the FIM SuperSport 300 global title in Portugal yesterday (Sunday) with an advantage of just 0.053 seconds over her nearest rival in the 10th round.
Her fellow competitors were men – second-placed Alfonso Coppola, from Italy, is now at the top of the championship standings, and Spain's Marc García came third.
The season is not over yet, but Ana's victory at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in the south of Portugal is a first for women on two wheels.
And she has already set a precedent for ladies on bikes: in 2013, Ana was the first female to win a World Championship-level point in a race for over 10 years.
She was only 16 at the time.
Ana is being hailed as a potential female Marc Márquez – another Spaniard who, at age 20, became the youngest rider ever to win a World Championship in his MotoGP rookie year, a feat he repeated the following season and which he looks set to clinch for a fourth time this year aged 24.
