Airport strikes called off thanks to undisclosed agreement with AENA and Enaire
26/09/2017
AIRPORT strikes across Spain have been called off thanks to a 'pre-agreement' between unions and staff of the State-controlled firms AENA and Enaire.
Industrial action due for September did not go ahead as all bar two elements of workers' requests had been agreed in time by the firms.
The only issues outstanding as at today's (Tuesday's) meeting were pay increases and unions' requirement for 600 extra staff to be taken on in addition to those replaced due to voluntary exits and retirements.
A 'crunch' meeting today with the General Workers' Union (UGT), Labourers' Commissions (CCOO), USO, Enaire and AENA was set to try to resolve these two matters to prevent strikes throughout October and December and on November 3 and 5.
The ministries of the treasury and public works had agreed to review their budget.
None of the parties to the pow-wow today have revealed what has been finally agreed, but the UGT, CCOO and USO appear to be sufficiently satisfied that they have cancelled the shut-downs that would have led to airport chaos in 25 flight hubs in every area from security and baggage-handling through to cafés and restaurants.
For the foreseeable future, though, airports in Spain will now be operating as usual.
