Has Madrid's Plaza Mayor been 'grassed up'?
28/09/2017
THE Spanish capital's main square right in the heart of the urban hub is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year – and thousands of internet surfers were stunned to see it had been turned into a giant grassy field on Thursday.
Photos of the Plaza Mayor covered in velvet-green lawn with tourists and residents milling about gave this heavily-frequented spot an idyllic, relaxing air, and somewhere for sweltering city-dwellers to flop in the sun.
In practice, only a 60-metre-diameter circle of grass has been fitted in the centre, but photographs taken from the correct angle make it appear as though the entire square is carpeted in grass.
The grassy circle is the work of an artist, identified as SpY, as a tribute to the Plaza on its fourth centenary, and will only be in place until Sunday.
Many residents, however, like the square's new look so much that they are thinking of campaigning for the city council to permanently 'grass up' the lively enclave and breathe a bit of life into the smoggy metropolitan area.
