A SHARP rise in the number of fixed-rate mortgages in Spain has been reported in the past two years – and they now account for 43% of every new loan taken out.
Bankia doubles 2016 mortgage total in eight months this year
15/10/2017
STATE-OWNED financial entity Bankia has signed up twice as many mortgages for buying homes this year than it did in the whole of 2016 – a total of €1.18 billion in property loans between January and August inclusive.
During that time, Bankia agreed 10,994 mortgages, compared with 5,373 over the whole of last year – an increase of 130% over a 12-month period and 104% on the same eight months in 2016.
The launch of Bankia's commission-free mortgage in February has largely helped, as shown by the fact that in the whole of 2016, the bank lent €817 million, compared with €1.18bn in the first eight months of 2017.
Bankia began to release, albeit tentatively, its mortgage loans without commissions in January 2016, available to those who had their salaries paid into an account at the bank or had a pension fund there with the contributions coming out of a Bankia account.
Self-employed customers are also able to sign up, with a specific type of account tailored to them, and another aimed solely at clients who carry out their banking online includes advantages unique to these individuals under the entity's Cuenta On scheme.
