Debate over banning short-distance flights takes off, but the cons outweigh the pros
Rain appears at last – and helps Galicia firefighters
18/10/2017
LONG-AWAITED rain has hit Spain at last after weeks of dry weather – and the change in climate is most welcome in the north-western region of Galicia where it is helping to bring the devastating forest fires under control.
So far, the infernos in all four provinces – A Coruña, Ourense, Pontevedra and Lugo – have destroyed 28,300 acres (11,500 hectares) including numerous houses and cars, and claimed four lives, two of whom were a pair of female pensioners trying to escape in a van and who got trapped on the road, surrounded by flames.
Heavy and persistent rain is expected in Andalucía, especially across the Strait of Gibraltar, today along with Catalunya, the Pyrénées and the Balearic Islands.
Locally-torrential downpours are forecast in western Galicia, towards the coast, and in parts of Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra, and the provinces of Huesca (Aragón) and Lleida (Catalunya) which back onto the French border.
Temperatures will drop significantly today across the country, falling to lows of 4ºC in the province of León – but still reaching highs of 26ºC in the regions of Valencia and the Balearics – and high winds are expected in the Ebro Valley, the Ampurdán district of Girona, the island of Menorca, and the southern Aragón mountains and Cantabrian Sea across the north coast.
Rainfall will be less intense to the east of the mainland, and only light showers are forecast in the Comunidad Valenciana's three provinces – Alicante, Valencia and Castellón – this afternoon or evening.
The Canary Islands will escape the wet weather and remain sunny and stable.
