Melanie Griffith: “My marriage to Antonio gave me epilepsy”
29/10/2017
ACTRESS Melanie Griffith says the final years of her marriage to Antonio Banderas were 'so stressful' that living together 'gave her epilepsy'.
“I never realised what was happening – the last two attacks I had were on board a boat in Cannes; I had a huge convulsion and I was taken to a doctor,” says Ms Griffith, 60.
“Afterwards, we went back to the yacht and I had another.
“When I returned to the USA, they told me I had epilepsy – something they'd never told me in 20 years.”
This was back in 2011 – three years before Melanie and Antonio, 57, finally separated.
Her story is reported in the current edition of the magazine Lecturas, whose reporter Lola Seguí covered Melanie giving a talk on her condition at a meeting with a charitable foundation working for women's brain health.
The foundation is also supported by Basic Instinct actress Sharon Stone, 59, who survived a brain haemorrhage 16 years ago.
“Every attack I had was during extremely stressful moments,” Ms Griffith revealed.
She said she went to a doctor regularly for tests, and was told it was 'an anomaly' and medics 'did not know what it was'.
But the actress claims that after her 18-year marriage to the Málaga-born star broke down, she 'started to recover', partly aided with medication for 'stress'.
“I don't feel stressed any more,” Griffith confides.
“Women look after the family, have husbands, a life, children to care for, a house to look after, and we work – I don't think I've slept properly in the last 35 years, and I still don't. My sleep cycle is totally wrecked.”
Doctors have since confirmed that her epilepsy has 'disappeared'.
“They did every test possible on my brain and couldn't find any epilepsy, or anything else to say I was ill, so it must have been the stress – my brain was a disaster, if you get me,” Melanie reports.
Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith left fans stunned when their apparently rock-solid relationship broke up in 2014.
They have a daughter in common, Stella del Carmen, 21, and Melanie's daughter Dakota – star of the film version of Fifty Shades of Grey – from her previous relationship with Don Johnson has always been close to Antonio, who considers her his own child.
The photograph shows Antonio and Melanie in 2010, a year before she says she suffered her first epileptic fit.
