Toni Nadal retires from training nephew Rafa
20/11/2017
TOP tennis star Rafael Nadal's uncle Toni has ceased as the world number one's trainer after 27 years and 75 titles together.
“Our relationship has always been atypically easy,” Toni Nadal (pictured right) revealed, although he says he has been 'more annoying than placid and more demanding than flattering' as his nephew's coach.
“This week's Masters' Cup was the final chapter of my career as trainer for my nephew Rafael [pictured left]. I've now concluded the happy 27-year era which started when my brother Sebastián's son entered my tennis court at the age of three,” said Toni.
“I'm now leaving his court, but my path does not end here – I will continue to be closely linked to tennis because it is my greatest love, and my enthusiasm for the sport, luckily, remains intact.”
Concerning his tough approach as trainer to the Mallorca-born ace since 1991, Toni says: “I've created more insatisfaction in him than contentment, and have always passed all the responsibility for his results and playing to my nephew himself.”
In his announcement about giving up as Rafa's coach, Toni thanked all his nephew's fans, his team and the reporters who have kept track of his successes, and 'most of all' thanked Rafa.
“Finally, I must give special thanks and enormous appreciation to the one who has been entirely responsible for my luck as trainer: my nephew Rafael. My relationship with him has always been atypically easy given the world we move around in. Thanks to Rafael's good manners, respect and passion, I've been able to develop my own way of understanding this profession.
“Thanks to him, I've experienced moments that have surpassed all my dreams as coach; I've travelled to some incredible places and met some truly interesting and important people in many fields.
“Right now, I feel enormously valued and loved because Rafael's image has buoyed up my own much more than I deserve.”
As yet, neither Toni nor Rafa have confirmed who will be the latter's new trainer, but Rafa recently announced he would not be playing any more this season after crashing out of the ATP World Tour Finals in London against Belgium's David Goffin after his long-running knee injury flared up.
