José Miguel Camejo, 58, had served in the Basque Country and Navarra during the years the separatist terrorist cell ETA was active, and was well-known nationally because of a press photo from many years ago in which he confronted leader of outlawed Basque political party Batasuna, Arnaldo Otegui, during a demonstration.
Camejo had been back in the Canary Islands, where he was originally from, for just over a decade – firstly in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and later in the region's other provincial capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
He had won numerous medals and distinctions for his life's work, including an award from the Canary Island regional government.
As yet, the cause and motive for his death is not known.
His colleagues, investigating, have not confirmed whether they suspect suicide or foul play, nor have they revealed any possible suspects.
