Man reports himself to police for hitting his girlfriend
A 19-YEAR-OLD Galicia man has reported himself to the police for hitting his wife.

Local Police in Vigo (Pontevedra province) have placed the youth under arrest after he turned up at the station at 23.30 last night (Thursday) saying he wanted to file a formal complaint against himself.

Identified only by his initials of K. L. T. P. B., the teen – who is originally from the west African archipelago of Cabo Verde – went with the police in a patrol car to his house, although he got cold feet when they arrived and tried to make a run for it.

Officers managed to catch up with him and put him in handcuffs, but there was no answer at the door.

They took the young man to the walk-in clinic on Vigo's C/ Pizarro to be sedated, and were informed once there that his girlfriend had just left after being treated for injuries and had asked the doctors to give her a police complaint form.

Medical staff across Spain are now required to ask pertinent questions if they believe a patient's injuries are caused by domestic violence, and if this turns out to be the case, can provide them with a form on the spot to complete and pass on to the police, who will be called out as a matter of procedure.
