KING Felipe VI's nephew Froilán de Marichalar and his friends were mugged outside a bingo hall in Madrid recently, reports have revealed today (Saturday).
Froilán, son of the Infanta Elena – the King's eldest sister – and her ex-husband Jaime de Marichalar is said to have become a regular at Canoe bingo hall on the Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid's business boulevard, in the past few months, and he and his group were carrying an envelope containing a large amount of money in cash.
According to the magazine La Otra Crónica, the 'speed with which they spent the money' and the fact that they reported the matter immediately 'suggests it was a very hefty sum', although the exact figure has not been revealed.
Froilán and the group were physically attacked, but not injured, and the money stolen.
The thief was caught and identified very quickly.
Canoe bingo hall did not want to comment on the incident, wishing to protect their customers.
The venue is very close to Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu stadium, where the premier league team was playing Borussia Dortmund at the time.
