BARCELONA is Spain's top city-break destination for foreign tourists and Madrid for visitors already living in Spain, according to a survey by airline search engine Jetcost.
And 10 Spanish cities are in the top 20 most-searched on the site – Barcelona, Madrid, Málaga, Sevilla, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Bilbao, Alicante and Ibiza hog 50% of the 'favourite' list.
Whilst Spanish tourists on a 'staycation' are most likely to opt for a trip to Madrid, the capital is the second-most searched city on Jetcost by the French, Italians and Portuguese, the fourth for the Dutch and the fifth for the Germans and Brits.
Barcelona is number one for the French, Italians, Portuguese and Russians, the second choice for Germans and for Spaniards living in Spain, and the third for the Dutch and British.
Málaga is top for the Dutch and second for Brits, whilst Palma de Mallorca is number one for Germans and seventh for the British, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is fourth favourite for the British and second for the Russians, whilst Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is in the top 10 for Brits, the French and the Dutch.
Bilbao is also in the top 10 for the Portuguese, Spanish and Russians.
Alicante was the top-searched destination on Jetcost for Brits last year, second for Dutch and fourth for the French and Germans.
Non-Spanish destinations in the most-searched list are London, Paris, Rome and Amsterdam for Europe, and La Habana (Cuba), Buenos Aires, New York and Miami for the rest of the world, being the main four destinations for Spaniards making long-haul trips.
