AN INFANT given a free sample of the baby milk withdrawn from the shelves in France has died from salmonella poisoning – the only known case in Spain so far.
All other brands manufactured by the French firm Lactalis were withdrawn from the shelves in Spain several weeks ago thanks to the European Union's Rapid Alert System for Food and Fodder (RASFF), meaning no other babies are believed to be at risk.
The child who died in the Basque Country contracted salmonella a month ago, but the Spanish Agency for Consumers, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN) did not release the details until this week as it needed to check the brand of the baby milk given to the affected infant.
The milk in question was one of a number of free samples given to the baby's mother by his paediatrician and is not on sale.
Spain's health ministry has confirmed no other cases have been reported of infants with salmonella and doctors have been warned to destroy all samples of milk produced by Lactalis.
