REAL Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo was sporting a black eye when he turned up to training today (Monday) after a blow to the face during yesterday's match against Deportivo A Coruña saw him go viral on social media for putting a mobile phone in 'selfie' mode to check his injury.
He was snapped borrowing a mobile from a member of Real Madrid's medical team to have a look at the open wound near his left eye using the phone as a mirror, and the picture has now done the rounds of Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
Even though, once cleaned up, the injury was very small, it was enough to leave a shiner on the Portuguese national team captain's face and for Madrid manager Zinedine 'Zizou' Zidane to elect to send him off as a precaution.
But the accidental collision with Schär in the 84th minute did not prevent Ronaldo's header from landing between the goalposts and taking the score up to 6-1 to Real Madrid.
Another goal ended the match on 7-1, giving the flagging premier league team a much-needed boost after a long-running results crisis which has been giving Zidane and his players headaches.
Ronaldo's two goals, and Gareth Bale's two, were key to the team's sweeping victory - along with another spectacular scoring by Nacho Fernández – which meant the Portuguese and Welsh pair became the stars of the show for their performance, not just for the former's injury and his ingenious move of using a mobile phone as a mirror on the pitch.
