Michael Jackson 'Forever King of Pop' returns to Madrid
23/01/2018
MICHAEL Jackson is back on stage in Madrid – at least, in spirit – eight years after the box-office smashing musical Forever King of Pop first aired in the capital in tribute to the artistic legend a year after he died.
Sponsored by Michael's brother Jermaine Jackson and described by their father Joseph as 'the best show on earth' about the deceased singer, Forever King of Pop is on at the Nuevo Apolo in Madrid until March 11.
Based upon its resounding success in 2010, the show is expected to attract over 400,000 spectators.
“When our father saw it he was delighted. I'm looking forward to seeing it, too,” said Jermaine who, along with Michael, were two of the original Jackson Five.
“We were born in an era of big stars: The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder...and we wanted to be like them.
“Michael was a great artist, but most importantly, he was a great human being. Many of his songs spoke of changing the world and healing people. That's the image I'd like people to remember of him.”
Jermaine says his brother's music 'managed to change society' by 'awakening the conscience' of the masses about the world's problems.
“I've often had people tell me, for example, that thanks to my brother's songs, they've learnt to speak English,” Jermaine admits.
The work of stage director Jesús Sanz-Sebastián and musical director Guillermo Sánchez, the second round of the show will be fleshed out by Rafa Blas and Lola Dorado from The Voice and a team of dancers who include Álex Blanco, considered one of the best Michael Jackson impersonators in the world.
Jermaine Jackson says it gives him 'tremendous satisfaction' seeing shows like Forever King of Pop 'where the figure of Michael is treated with such affection'.
But although Blanco is world-famous for imitating the artist, Jermaine says his son Jaafar is the best in the world.
“He's got Michael's DNA and it shows,” he says.
“We feel blessed by this third generation of Jacksons – they're obedient, treat people well, and have a great love of music and dance.”
